JU College of Fine Arts Becomes EPIC

Jacksonville, Fla.—Jacksonville University’s College of Fine Arts is proud to announce an EPIC Partnership with Kawai. The Elite Performing Instrument Collection (EPIC) is a unique institutional program made possible by the Shigeru Kawai Endowment. Institutions that qualify will be given the opportunity to acquire an elite assortment of fine Kawai and Shigeru Kawai instruments.

Music is a universal language loved by most everyone, particularly young adults. Not only does it aid in the mathematical development of the right brain, but it also connects to the senses and conveys emotion which many times words lack. The study of music at JU includes majors in piano, musical theatre, composition & theory, music business and voice. Pianos are the core instrument, the lifeblood, of each of these areas of focus.

From learning to read and write music, analyzing compositions, recording and studying the business side of the music business, students can do it all within the College of Fine Arts. "Our enrollment is growing, yet our tools are lacking with nearly half of the pianos on campus dating back to 1963 or earlier." said Dr. Robert Tudor, chair of music. "Replacing our oldest instruments and becoming a Kawai “Epic” institution will ensure the practice and performance pianos are suitable for accreditation and for student success."

Furthermore, these pianos echo beyond the classroom, their purpose is not for instruction isolated from performance, but rather for performance that radiates into our community and travel with our students for years to come.
