Position Summary

The Lab Inter-disciplinary Instructor works in a team-based primarily environment within the Keigwin School of Nursing to oversee the use of the nursing skills lab by undergraduate and graduate nursing students.  The Lab Inter-disciplinary Instructor may also serves as an instructor and mentor to other healthcare science students.

Essential Job Duties

  • Under the director of the Skills Lab Director, assist with the coordination and assembly of laboratory and clinical activities for courses such as Strategies for Academic Success, Nursing Fundamentals, Introduction to Pharmacology and Nursing Health Assessment.
  • Oversee the students, and volunteer's activities designated by the Skills Lab and Simulation Technology and Applied Research Director(s).
  • Acquire, maintain and inventory equipment, materials, supplies based on anticipated need.
  • Perform basic maintenance of equipment.
  • Provide the general cleanliness and security of the laboratory.  Appropriately dispose of hazardous materials.  Ensure the lab meets all OSHA standards and maintains appropriate documents.
  • Integrate and teach current medical errors, proactive and safety mandates in proactive scenarios in the lab setting.
  • Under the direction of the Skills Lab and Simulation, Training and Applied Research Directors, assist with the coordination of faculty/class utilization of the skills lab.
  • Assist with inter-disciplinary student training and trouble-shooting for Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Serve as an inter-disciplinary clinical resource for students (open lab and tutoring) and remediation (class/clinical).
  • Collaborate with the Skills Lab and Simulation Training and Applied Research to develop inter-disciplinary simulation case scenarios and activities.
  • Directors(s) to develop, organize, and present effective inter-disciplinary enrichment materials, workshops, and methods for students to enhance learning in the laboratory setting.
  • Facilitate contact with appropriate resources for students experience academic difficulty.
  • Plan and implement remediation to meet the learning objectives in the various inter-disciplinary clinical settings based upon faculty needs and the Skills Lab and Simulation Training and Applied Research Director(s).
  • Assist inter-disciplinary students with study skills, priority setting, and test taking skills, including NCLEX-RN testing taking strategies and time/stress management.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Participate in professional development and attend professional meetings
  • Attend regularly schedule JU school of nursing general faculty meetings and activities.
  • Coordinate laboratory and clinical activities for courses such as Strategies for Academic
  • Success, Nursing Fundamentals, Intro to Pharmacology and Nursing Health Assessment, and inter-disciplinary courses as directed by the Skills Lab and Simulation Training and Applied Research Director.
  • Provide feedback to the Skills Lab and Simulation Training and Applied Research Director(s) regarding skills lab operations.
  • Coordinate contracted lab skills and assigned non-proctored ATI exams for reentry students and provide formal documentation of successful completion to the Director of Undergraduate Nursing Programs.
  • Participate in Human Standardized Patient Simulations, low-fidelity, mid-fidelity, and high-fidelity simulations in the Skills Lab, and Simulations Training and Applied Research Center.
  • Participate in community events hosted by Jacksonville University or The Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences (BRCHS).
  • Work flexible hours as designated by the Skills Lab and Simulation Training and Applied Research Director(s) according to the needs of the Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences (BRCHS) students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Work Conditions

  • Primarily indoors except when traveling between campus buildings or being off-campus.
  • Work is performed under minimum supervision and requires incumbent to exercise independence and discretion.

Physical Requirements

  • Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines.
  • Physical lifting ability of simulation manikins and equipment up to 80 lbs.
  • Near and far vision sufficient to read written communications and computer display screens.
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone.

Prerequisites Required For Position

Minimum Education Requirement

  • BSN, MSN preferred.

Minimum Work Experience

  • Unencumbered Florida RN license.
  • Current BLS, and current ACLS (preferred)
  • Diverse current clinical background experience
  • Lab instructor and previous experience with simulation development and use of equipment (preferred).
  • Instruct, communicate, and demonstrate nursing skills techniques to nursing students.
  • Self-directed, have computer proficiency that includes the knowledge necessary to develop case scenarios and simulations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to evaluate nursing students in the tech/learning lab environment.
  • Knowledge of effective teaching techniques and curriculum development.
  • Skills in facilitating development of student problem solving skills.
  • Ability to design effective learning activities for students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse inter-disciplinary students and faculty, staff, student workers, Skills Lab and Simulation Training and Applied Research Director(s).
